A fine ripple, a pronounced wave, a linear fluted surface and a deeply sculpted pattern can all technically be described as textured, but they create very different rooms.
Fine texture tends to be easy to use across a larger area because it adds interest without becoming the main event. Stronger relief has considerably more presence and can work beautifully as a feature wall, behind a basin or within a shower enclosure.
The direction of the texture matters too. Linear relief can emphasise the architecture of a wall and lead the eye vertically or horizontally, while irregular texture creates a softer, less predictable effect.
So rather than asking whether a tile is textured, ask what kind of visual movement you want the wall to have.
