Collection: Textured
Texture can completely change the way a wall feels. Even a simple colour becomes more interesting when the surface has ridges, ripples, roughness or other subtle relief for light to move across. Textured wall tiles are particularly useful when you want depth and detail without relying on a strong pattern, and they can work in both calm, understated interiors and more expressive spaces.

Texture is about light as much as touch
When we talk about a textured tile, it's easy to focus on how it feels under your hand. Visually, though, the most important thing is often what happens when light reaches the surface.
A completely flat tile gives light very little to interact with. Raised areas catch highlights while recessed areas fall into softer shadow, creating tonal variation even when the tile itself is one colour.
That means the position of the wall matters. A textured tile beside a window or exposed to directional wall lighting will usually reveal considerably more of its relief than the same tile under very even illumination. If you are deliberately choosing texture for its visual effect, think about where the light is coming from as well as which tile you like.
Not all texture creates the same atmosphere
A fine ripple, a pronounced wave, a linear fluted surface and a deeply sculpted pattern can all technically be described as textured, but they create very different rooms.
Fine texture tends to be easy to use across a larger area because it adds interest without becoming the main event. Stronger relief has considerably more presence and can work beautifully as a feature wall, behind a basin or within a shower enclosure.
The direction of the texture matters too. Linear relief can emphasise the architecture of a wall and lead the eye vertically or horizontally, while irregular texture creates a softer, less predictable effect.
So rather than asking whether a tile is textured, ask what kind of visual movement you want the wall to have.
Pair texture with something deliberately smooth
Texture tends to look its best when there is another surface nearby that behaves differently.
A rippled wall against flat cabinetry makes the relief easier to appreciate. Fluted tile beside smooth stone creates a similar contrast. Even a simple combination of textured tile and painted plaster can work because the eye immediately notices the change in surface.
This is particularly useful in bathrooms and kitchens, where there are already plenty of hard surfaces. Rather than adding texture to everything, choose one surface to carry the detail and let the others support it.
You can also use colour to control the effect. A pale textured tile often lets the relief remain the main feature, while a deeper colour can make the shadows within the texture much more pronounced.
When should texture be the feature?
The amount of texture you use should relate to how much visual information the rest of the room already contains.
A heavily textured tile across every wall can become visually dominant, particularly in a small room or alongside patterned flooring, strong marble veining or decorative cabinetry. Used selectively, however, the exact same tile can create a very deliberate focal point.
A useful approach is to think about where your eye should land first. Behind a vanity, bath or kitchen worktop, texture can give a relatively small area considerable impact. On a larger wall, a quieter relief can create atmosphere without feeling overwhelming.
Texture also gives you a way to create interest without adding another colour. That can be especially useful when you already have a carefully balanced palette and don't want to introduce a competing shade simply to make the room feel less plain.
