Collection: Gloss

Gloss wall tiles are one of the easiest ways to bring a little more light and life to a room, but their appeal goes beyond simply being shiny. A glazed surface interacts with the light around it, so colour, texture, tile shape and even the position of a window can influence how the finished wall looks. Choosing the right gloss tile can completely change the atmosphere of a room.

A glossy wall tile reflects light rather than absorbing as much of it, which can make a room feel more luminous and give the walls greater visual depth. It doesn't create extra light, but it can make better use of the light that is already there.

The effect is particularly noticeable in smaller bathrooms, darker kitchens and rooms with limited natural light. A pale gloss tile can bounce daylight or artificial light around the space, while a deeper colour creates a different effect — more about richness and reflection than simply making the room feel brighter.

The direction of the light matters too. A wall lit from the side will often reveal more variation and surface movement than one illuminated evenly from the front. This is why the same gloss tile can look surprisingly different in a showroom, under a bathroom spotlight and in your own home.

The finish can change how we perceive colour. A gloss surface reflects its surroundings, so the shade you see isn't entirely coming from the pigment or glaze itself; it's also influenced by the light and colours around it.

This is one reason stronger gloss colours can look particularly rich. Deep greens, blues and burgundies can develop highlights and darker areas as light moves across the wall, giving them considerably more depth than a flat colour sample might suggest.

Lighter shades behave differently. White, cream and pale colours can pick up warmth from timber, surrounding paint or artificial lighting, which is why two rooms using the same tile can produce noticeably different results.

When choosing a gloss tile, it's therefore worth looking at a physical sample alongside the materials that will actually surround it, rather than judging the colour in isolation.

Gloss already gives a wall a degree of visual activity through reflection, so the rest of the room doesn't always need to compete.

This doesn't mean glossy tiles only work with minimalist interiors. In fact, timber, natural stone, brushed metals and softer textiles can create a lovely contrast because they absorb or diffuse light while the tile reflects it.

That's particularly useful when you're combining different textures. A glossy wall beside a matt worktop or natural timber vanity creates contrast that you can feel as well as see. By comparison, placing several highly reflective surfaces next to one another can sometimes make a room feel harder and more visually busy.

This is where the surrounding materials become part of the tile choice. The best gloss schemes usually have something quieter nearby to balance the reflection.

They can be particularly effective in both. In kitchens, the reflective surface works well on splashbacks and behind worktops because it helps introduce light and gives colour more presence without requiring a heavily patterned tile.

In bathrooms, gloss can be useful where you want the walls to feel brighter or more reflective, particularly alongside mirrors and good directional lighting.

The important distinction is between visual suitability and technical suitability. The exact product specification should always be checked for the area you're tiling, especially in wet zones, as not every wall tile is appropriate for every application.

The best gloss tile isn't necessarily the brightest or most reflective one. It's the one whose colour, surface, scale and reflection make sense alongside the architecture of the room.

Think about where the light comes from, what materials are already present, how much of the wall will be tiled and whether you want the surface to quietly support the room or become one of its main features.

That is where gloss becomes more than a finish. It becomes part of how the room behaves.
