20 -From Utility Room to Boot Room

Design the Room Around Real Life

The modern utility room often has to do much more than laundry.

It might be where you hang coats, leave muddy boots, wash the dog, store cleaning products, unload shopping or come in from the garden.

That makes the wall particularly important.

A tiled wall can provide a durable backdrop for all of these everyday activities while visually tying the different functions together. Instead of having one material around the sink, another around the door and painted walls everywhere else, a continuous tiled treatment can make the room feel far more cohesive.

This is where tile height becomes worth considering.

A traditional splashback-height application can work perfectly behind a sink or worktop. But in a busy boot-room-style utility, taking the tile higher can provide considerably more protection and create a stronger visual effect.

Full-height tiling can be particularly effective around the back door or dog-washing area, while a lower tiled section elsewhere can keep the scheme balanced.

The choice of tile can then determine the personality of the room.

Classic metro tiles create a timeless utility-room aesthetic. Handmade-look ceramics introduce warmth. Deeper colours create something more characterful, while simple neutral tiles allow cabinetry and storage to take centre stage.

The goal isn't to hide the fact that this is a working room.

It's to make the practicality feel intentional.

Design thought: Design for the mess, then make the mess look good.
