19 - Colour That Makes Chores Better

Reece Evel|

Why Should Utility Rooms Always Be White?

There is a temptation to make utility rooms completely neutral.

After all, they are usually busy spaces. White walls feel clean, practical and safe.

But a utility room is also one of the easiest places to introduce colour without disrupting the rest of your home.

A muted sage behind the washing machine can create a calm, natural atmosphere. A dusty blue can make a compact room feel fresher. Terracotta and clay tones can bring warmth to a space dominated by white appliances and cabinetry.

You don't necessarily need strong colour everywhere.

A single tiled wall can be enough to transform the room.

This is especially useful when the rest of the utility room is made up of functional elements: white appliances, simple cupboards, stainless steel sinks and practical shelving. The wall tile becomes the part that gives the room its identity.

Glazed tiles can also introduce subtle variation, allowing the colour to feel layered rather than flat. This works particularly well in smaller utility rooms where a completely uniform finish can sometimes feel a little sterile.

And because the room is usually tucked away from the main living spaces, you can afford to be more adventurous.

Design thought: If you wouldn't dare put that colour in the kitchen, try it in the utility room.
