Use Your Tiles to Change the Proportions
Cloakrooms can sometimes feel cramped, particularly when the ceiling is relatively low or the room is narrow.
The right wall-tile layout can subtly change how the proportions are perceived.
Vertical installation is one of the simplest ways to draw the eye upwards. A vertically stacked rectangular tile creates a sense of direction, encouraging the eye to follow the wall towards the ceiling.
The same principle can be achieved through elongated tiles or vertical textures. Fluted and ribbed surfaces are particularly effective because they introduce both texture and height without requiring a complicated pattern.
But you don't always need to tile every wall.
A strong tiled wall behind the basin can create a vertical focal point, particularly when the tile continues from the floor upwards or extends above the basin and mirror.
For a more traditional look, a horizontal metro tile can instead emphasise the width of a narrow room. The choice depends on what the room needs.
The important thing is to think about the direction of the tile, rather than simply choosing a colour.
