Cloakrooms are often the smallest room in the house, but that doesn't mean their design needs to be understated.
In fact, their size can be an advantage. With less wall to cover, a bolder wall tile can be introduced without having to commit to it across a large bathroom or kitchen. Deep greens, rich blues, earthy terracottas and decorative patterns can all work beautifully when used with intention.
The key is to embrace the room rather than trying to make it disappear.
A richly coloured tile across the walls can create a cocooning atmosphere, particularly when paired with warm lighting and simple sanitaryware. Rather than making the space feel smaller, the consistency can make the room feel deliberately designed.
For something quieter, consider a tonal scheme. A soft cream, sage or muted blue can still give a cloakroom considerable character when the tile has an interesting glaze or subtle variation.
Because there are usually fewer competing elements in a cloakroom, the wall tile has an opportunity to become the room's defining material.
