Collection: Artisan
Artisan wall tiles have a way of making a room feel less uniform and more individual. The term covers a surprisingly broad range of looks from softly irregular edges and gentle tonal variation to rippled surfaces, expressive glazes and more obviously handcrafted finishes. At Crafted, we've brought together a wide selection of artisan-inspired wall tiles, making it easier to find the right balance of colour, texture and character for your space.

What actually makes a tile feel artisan?
"Artisan" isn't really a finish in itself. It's more about the small differences that stop a tile looking completely machine-perfect.
That might be an uneven edge, slight variation in colour, a glaze that pools differently across the surface, or a texture that changes the way light is reflected. Some artisan tiles are deliberately quite restrained; others are full of movement and become a major feature of the room.
This distinction is useful when choosing a tile because two products can both be described as artisan while creating completely different interiors. A softly varied tile may simply take the clinical edge off a modern kitchen, whereas a heavily irregular glaze can become the focal point of the entire wall.
Rather than choosing something simply because it is labelled "artisan", look at what kind of irregularity you actually like.
Finding the right level of character
One of the biggest decisions with artisan tiles is how much variation you want to live with.
If you're after something subtle, look for gentle tonal shifts, softened edges or restrained surface movement. These can work beautifully across larger areas because they give the wall depth without overwhelming the rest of the room.
At the other end, strongly varied glazes, pronounced ripples and visibly irregular shapes can create a much more expressive result. They can be fantastic behind a vanity, around a bath or across a feature wall, but you may want to quieten the surrounding materials so the room doesn't become visually crowded.
Having a broad range of artisan tiles is useful precisely because there isn't one "correct" version. The perfect tile is the one whose level of imperfection matches the atmosphere you want to create.
Artisan is one of those categories where seeing a few different options side by side can completely change your preference. You may start looking for a softly coloured handmade tile and discover that a deeper glaze works better with your cabinetry, or realise that you prefer a quieter edge variation over a highly irregular surface.
That's why we've curated a wide selection of artisan wall tiles across different colours, formats, finishes and degrees of variation. The aim isn't to make every tile feel the same — it's to give you enough choice to find the one that feels right for your room.
When narrowing things down, think beyond colour. Consider the amount of texture, how much variation you want, the scale of the tile and how much attention you want the finished wall to attract.
Why handmade character works so well with modern interiors
Artisan tiles don't automatically mean country kitchens or traditional bathrooms.
In fact, some of the most effective combinations come from putting a slightly imperfect tile against very precise surroundings. Flat-fronted cabinetry, clean stone worktops, modern sanitaryware and simple brassware can make the small irregularities in the wall much more noticeable.
The contrast works because the two elements are doing different things. The furniture provides structure and precision; the tile introduces softness and variation.
This is particularly useful if you like contemporary interiors but don't want everything to feel overly polished. A little imperfection can make a room feel more relaxed without taking it in a rustic direction.
Choosing between glaze, texture and tonal variation
When comparing artisan tiles, it can help to separate three different sources of character.
A varied glaze changes the way colour and light move across the wall. Texture introduces physical relief, creating highlights and shadows. Edge variation changes the shape of the joints and softens the regularity of the installation.
Some tiles combine all three, while others rely almost entirely on one. That makes a big difference to the finished effect.
For example, a heavily rippled tile may have fairly simple colouring because the surface is doing the visual work. A tile with a dramatic glaze may need much less texture because the colour variation already creates plenty of movement.
This is one of the advantages of having a broad artisan collection to choose from: you can decide which type of character suits the room rather than settling for whatever the first "handmade-style" tile happens to offer.
