Turn the Cloakroom Into a Destination
A well-designed cloakroom can feel less like an overlooked practical space and more like a tiny boutique interior.
The secret is often commitment.
Instead of choosing individual finishes independently, think about the room as one complete composition. The wall tile establishes the atmosphere, while the basin, mirror, lighting and brassware reinforce it.
A warm handmade-look tile can create a relaxed, almost Mediterranean feeling when paired with natural timber and aged brass. A glossy deep-coloured tile can feel more dramatic alongside a simple stone basin and warm lighting. A classic cream metro tile can become much more sophisticated when combined with traditional sanitaryware and carefully chosen hardware.
Wall tile is particularly useful here because it can visually connect the different elements of a small room.
Taking the same tile around corners can create continuity. Tiling behind the basin and continuing around the room can make the space feel enveloping. A tiled wall extending from floor to ceiling can also give a relatively modest cloakroom a much more architectural presence.
You don't need expensive finishes to achieve the effect.
You need a clear idea of what you want the room to feel like.
