03 - Colour Drenching & The Immersive Bathroom

When One Tile Becomes the Whole Room

There was a time when bathroom design meant choosing one tile for the walls, another for the floor and perhaps a third for a feature area. Increasingly, designers are doing almost the opposite.

Tile drenching is about committing to a material or colour and allowing it to flow across multiple surfaces. Walls, shower areas and sometimes floors become part of one continuous visual envelope, creating a bathroom that feels immersive rather than divided into separate sections. It is one of the defining directions in current bathroom design.

The beauty of the approach is its simplicity. A deep green tile carried throughout a compact bathroom can make the colour feel intentional rather than overwhelming. A warm stone-effect tile can create a quieter, almost spa-like atmosphere when used across the majority of the room.

This doesn't mean everything needs to be identical. Variation can come through brassware, timber, sanitaryware, lighting and textiles. The tile simply becomes the architectural backdrop.

It can also be surprisingly effective in smaller bathrooms. Rather than breaking the room into contrasting zones, using one continuous colour or material allows the eye to travel uninterrupted around the space, helping the room feel more cohesive.

For anyone nervous about introducing colour, this approach can actually make choosing a scheme easier. Instead of asking which colours should I combine?, ask which colour would I be happy to immerse myself in?

Design thought: Don't just choose a feature wall. Consider making the entire bathroom the feature.
